aka…Rodney is a bastard.
Just got off the trainer, my “important” workout of the day. Apparently my 90 minute ride outdoors this morning wasn’t sufficient. Coach Paul told me if I only had to pick one of 2 workouts today, to pick the trainer. Swell.
I feel like crap, battling a cold, and kinda pms-y. And as I suffered through 40 minutes on the bastard (15 minutes short of what was prescribed), I had plenty of time to ponder the mysteries of the Bike trainer.
1. My hands start dripping sweat within 2 minutes of pedaling. Why do you sweat 100x’s more in 10 minutes on a bike trainer than you do in 3.5 hours on the road?
2. Every minute feels like 10. Sometimes, time even stands still. At one point, the earth stopped rotating and wifey-Ann got thrown out of her chair. It’s weird.
3. My crotch falls dead asleep on Rodney within minutes, and then promptly wakes up with a zing (and not the good kind) the moment I hop off. This does not happen even on 3 hour rides on the road. (Though i do remember a similar pattern with my ex).
4. Even my favorite trashy reality shows aren’t amusing while pedaling away.
5. It is a simple piece of equipment, and yet, it takes me 20 minutes to get my bike situated on it. How come my fine motor skills deteriorate minutes before I’m set to ride on it.
6. Is my trainer inherently evil…? Because the dogs run and hide every time I’m on it. Dogs know these things.
7. I feel heavier than usual on the trainer and fatter when I get off.
Can’t wait for the next session. *groan*
<—-Post-trainer.
Where are the smelling salts?
I couldn’t agree more! Riding the trainer is akin to torture in my book. A 30 min ride on that thing feels like hours. Glad I’m not alone in this feeling.
Nope, you’re spot-on.
I miss you Bri!!!!!! MIIIIISSSSS!!!
Question one can be answered with simple heat transfer. Heat is removed from your body by 3 modes, conduction, radiation, and convection. At speed, convection becomes predominant becuase air is flowing across your body at about 20 mph. On the trainer, you’re at 0, no convection. The only way you lose heat is radiation and conduction. Air sucks at conducting heat away and radiation is minimal. Your body decides it really needs to shed heat, hence sweat.
The non-nerd answer is, trainers are evil!
Eric is a nerd.
Ewww gross! You laid on the carpet when you were THAT SWEATY? Nice bike though!!!
I hope your not sweating all over your shiny new top tube.
[...] Why oh why does my crotch go numb on the trainer and not outdoors? WHY? http://theathenaproject.wordpress.com/2010/03/03/mysteries-of-the-bike-trainer/ [...]
